Our Wi-Fi Internet Access
New WI-FI Hotspot Covers Downtown Sault Ste. Marie - February 24, 2005

Did you feel your PDA vibrate when you drove into town? Then you must be near Cup of the Day. Does your laptop yearn to be connected to check your email or get updated sports scores and news?

The E.U.P.’s favorite coffee shop, Cup of the Day has once again added yet another aspect to the local coffee scene. Owner Anthony Stackpoole is pleased to announce the transmission of wireless internet access which went HOT on February 24.

Sault Ste. Marie first free public Wi-Fi Hotspot can be found in this downtown Sault Ste. Marie’s Best Coffee Shop & Deli, located at 406 Ashmun Street. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge to customers who can surf the web and check email using laptop computers and PDA’s. A LAN-line is also available for those without wireless cards.

Owner Anthony Stackpoole states, “This is an added service we provide to our customer base. We like to stay on top of the market with regards to coffee and things that go with the industry.” Stackpoole says, “It’s quite impressive to me when my competitors follow my lead. I must be doing something right and it pays off to stay one step ahead.”

As technology has become available to our area, Cup of the Day has stayed current with trends. “I remember my first endeavor into public internet access 6 years ago with an ISDN line and 3 public computers” says Stackpoole. “It took up a good portion of room in my deli and was expensive to maintain”. We even hosted monthly meetings of the Sault Area Computer Society. Over the years, as more and more people came in with laptops, the ISDN line gave way to a phone line that people used to dial into their ISP. Stackpoole says that “since most computers are now made with wireless capabilities, Wi-Fi is the way to go.” Up to 50 connections are allowed with our router and with wireless transfer rates up to 54Mbps, downloading information is a snap. Four wired computers can also be connected using the DSL data source.
